"Going Down" is a poignant short film that delves into the harrowing cycle of domestic violence, focusing on its generational impact. The story begins with Brendan, his wife Veronica, and their young son Vincent arriving at an office building to pick up Brendan’s mother, Rita Williams. A heated argument over finances quickly escalates between Brendan and Veronica as they enter the elevator. Brendan's anger turns threatening and nearly physical, mirroring the abusive behavior he witnessed in his own father, Malcolm, during his childhood. As Brendan shoves Veronica against the elevator wall, young Vincent attempts to intervene but is harshly pushed to the floor.
The elevator doors open to reveal Rita, who is shocked by the scene unfolding before her. Veronica, distraught, seeks comfort in her mother-in-law's arms. This confrontation triggers Brendan’s painful memories of his own father’s abuse toward his mother, Rita. He recalls a particularly traumatic incident where he tried to protect his mother only to be pushed aside, and how Rita bravely declared her intention to leave Malcolm, only to be met with further violence. The flashback culminates in the night Rita and young Brendan escaped from Malcolm while he was asleep, a desperate flight that ended with Malcolm thwarted by the closing elevator doors.
Back in the present, Brendan, overwhelmed by the realization that he is perpetuating the same cycle of abuse, collapses in tears. He pulls Vincent close and implores him to break the cycle: "Son, don’t be like me, don’t be like my father or grandfather. Be a better man than I am. Love the women in your life." This heartfelt plea marks the beginning of Brendan’s journey toward change, underscoring the film’s central message that breaking free from the chains of generational violence is possible, but it requires courage, self-awareness, and a commitment to being better for the next generation.
